Our vision is to change how the world sees and treats people and communities of color by addressing disparities through community and economic development, criminal justice reform, education, health care, income inequality, and wealth building. And we’re starting in our own backyard, encouraging a holistic approach to righting the wrongs of the past.
In the 1950’s and 1960’s, the city of Nashville, Davidson County, and the Federal Highway Department began construction of I-40 through Jefferson Street, the central business district for communities of color on Jefferson Street and the greater 37208 community. Blocks of commercial and residential buildings were leveled to make room for the interstate. Properties declined in value due to reduced connectivity. African American businesses and churches were destroyed. Additionally, the community’s economic and residential base was dislocated.
With our ABC Community Development Initiative, we have an opportunity to atone for past harm and address the civil rights violations of the residents of 37208. This community can then realize racial, economic, and environmental justice that is exemplary and transformational.
